Hungarian GP qualifying: Lando Norris grabs pole from Lewis Hamilton in dramatic finish as Max Verstappen spins | F1 News

Lando Norris wrested the Hungarian Grand Prix from Lewis Hamilton in a thrilling final to win in Budapest.

Ferrari’s Hamilton appeared in contention for his first Grand Prix medal since the same event three years ago when he finished tenth to Norris after the first runs in Q3, but the McLaren driver got the better of him as his rivals struggled in the second race to take a 12,000 second victory over his compatriot.

Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, who leads Hamilton by 45 points in the Drivers’ Championship, had to settle for fourth behind another Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

Norris’ team-mate Oscar Piastri was fifth, finishing ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who spun in the final corner on his final flying lap.

Lando Norris snatches pole from Lewis Hamilton as Max Verstappen and George Russell struggle in Q3 at the Hungaroring.

George Russell’s struggles continued as he took seventh place, and worryingly his Mercedes broke on the lap at the end of the session.

Both Hamilton and Antonelli are at risk of grid penalties as they face post-session investigations. Hamilton may have blocked Piastri, while Antonelli may not have slowed down enough as he approached the yellow flags warning him of Verstappen’s spin.
