The 2026 World Cup was the first to feature an expanded format of 48 teams, instead of the usual 32-team tournament. However, there have been reports that FIFA may increase the field to 64 teams that will play in the 2030 World Cup, which marks the centenary of the tournament. The 2030 edition will be hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal, while the opening matches will be played in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay to commemorate the tournament’s origins. CONMEBOL PRESIDENT Alejandro Dominguez says plans have begun for the expansion of 64 teams. Our very own Pardeep Cattry has appeared in a new format that may have:
- Catty: “The new format still has its flaws but they were predictable, naturally. The calculations to determine which third-placed teams would go through were not only headache-inducing but also sometimes unsuccessful. South Korea and Scotland spent days in their respective camps, stuck in purgatory as they waited for other results to finally knock them out of the tournament. Few of those groups made it to the finals except for Australia. Paraguay played to a 0-0 tie with the concept of being known as the “Disgrace of Santa Clara,” while the round of 32 sometimes felt like an extension of the group stage rather than the actual start of the knockout. A few soccer executives with questionable taste (and selfish motives) will argue against a solution to expand the World Cup to 64 teams to resolve that dispute once and for all. they are already trying to make that happen by 2030. There is no going back to the 32-team World Cup, next summer’s women’s edition in Brazil is essentially a farewell in style. Whether a 64-team plan is feasible or not, there is a certain amount of judgment that must be reserved for a 48-team plan since the sample size is small. The magic of the World Cup, however, is that it can be undeniably entertaining either way, which has been the highlight of the summer.”
