Mauricio Pochettino is set to sign a new USMNT deal for the 2030 World Cup

Mauricio Pochettino he will reportedly continue as coach of the US men’s national team, moving closer to signing a new deal that will see him take over the reins at the 2030 World Cup.
Talks between Pochettino and US Soccer are going well, according to broadcaster Andres Cantor, and an announcement is expected soon. (Disclaimer: Cantor is the father of CBS Sports Golazo Network anchor Nico Cantor.) The alliance aims to have Pochettino on the field for the USMNT’s first post-World Cup friendlies in September and October, which have yet to be announced. A deal, however, is close but not yet done, according to The Athletic.
Pochettino originally joined the national team in September 2024 in a deal that bypassed the World Cup, focusing solely on presenting a strong performance in the domestic competition. He received an offer to extend his time before the start of the World Cup, the coach previously admitted that he had heard the vision of the alliance for the next four years at a dinner on May 24 at Jean-Georges, a restaurant located inside the Trump International Hotel & Tower in New York.
“[U.S. Soccer CEO J.T. Batson] He asked if we were open to listening [to] the project of the federation for the next four years and we said, of course, we are open, “said Pochettino days later. “It is true until last Sunday, we did not have the idea that the federation is happy with us, not happy, they want us for the future.”
The teams agreed at the time to wait until after the USMNT’s run at this summer’s World Cup to make a decision. The US team started brightly and built a nation, with more than 50 million people tuning in for their 4-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16, their fourth consecutive World Cup exit at that stage.
I In Argentina The native was linked with several jobs elsewhere during his spell with the USMNT. The list is very comprehensive AC Milanwho were reportedly chasing him a few weeks before the World Cup but ended up choosing to hire former Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim instead. His time with the American team marked his end in charge of the national team and yet introducing his attack-oriented style of play that came with a learning curve during the short journey to the World Cup, this team has proved to be equal in most competitions.
“For me, I’m very proud because in one year, I think about all the situations, I think this team has shown that we can play football, we can play football, we can compete, we need to keep improving,” Pochettino said after the end of the USMNT World Cup. “A lot of young players have a lot of talent and a lot of future and I think the generation of kids coming up behind, I think we’re still going to believe in that process.”
Pochettino will now have a great time as he prepares for a second World Cup with the USMNT, which he plans to use to build on the success of this summer’s tournament.
“It’s not like you’re on a rocket and you develop and grow like this,” he said after the game In Belgium defeat. “One year [ago]we [thought] that we were confused. When I think today about the way we did in that World Cup, I say we have improved a lot but the problem is [is] you are improving but sometimes, you are growing slowly. It is not a line that it will grow so fast … We all know that the process is about four years, a cycle because today I think we have closed a chapter in terms of testing.[ing] players.”
Pochettino will now be tasked with putting the team in a position to qualify for the 2030 World Cup. The next four years will be marked by a return to the World Cup qualifiers after going through the process, the right to host countries, and a trip to the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 and will reportedly take part in the Copa America earlier that summer. US Soccer has decided to prioritize the Olympic Games, which is an under-23 tournament for men’s teams; this cycle and tournament can be used as a stepping stone for rising talents who will be eager to enter the ranks of the big teams as early as 2030.
Batson revealed earlier this month that Pochettino and his staff were part of the process of recruiting USMNT veteran and former LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo to take over the Olympic team, a sign that Pochettino took the coalition’s approach to extending his contract seriously before finally deciding to do so.
