Who is JJ Gabriel? Manchester United’s ‘big talent’ and England prospect with Premier League ambitions and academy figures

As JJ Gabriel approaches Manchester United’s Premier League debut, head coach Michael Carrick has explained why the 15-year-old has been promoted so early.

Having included Gabriel in first-team training since his appointment in January, Carrick says the striker is “doing very well”.

“JJ is a huge talent,” Carrick agreed. “Obviously we think a lot of him, but patience is important in managing everything that comes with that and working with him in development.”

JJ Gabriel stats: Why Man United are excited about the striker

In his first season as a regular at Under-18 Premier League level, Gabriel scored his 21st goal in 23 games in all competitions in a win over title rivals Manchester City on 21 March.

He bagged hat-tricks against Derby County and Liverpool and the goal against City was Gabriel’s seventh in a row in all competitions, finding the net 10 times in those games and providing an assist.

“JJ is an amazing talent,” said Under 18s head coach Darren Fletcher, via United’s website. “I really enjoyed working with him, getting to know him.

“He’s a very loud young lad. There’s a lot of noise around him – and rightly so, because he’s a really talented kid.”

When can JJ Gabriel play for Manchester United?

Premier League rules state that players must be 15 years of age by August 31 of the season to play for the first team in the campaign.

Gabriel turned 15 on October 6, so he won’t be eligible for the league until 2026/27.

With most of United’s first-team players at the World Cup this summer, there may be opportunities for Gabriel to play for the first team during pre-season.

Two young players who are emerging in this Premier League campaign – Arsenal’s Max Dowman and Liverpool’s Rio Ngumoha – first caught the attention of many fans when they stood out for their clubs during the pre-season last year.

Ruben Amorim, who stepped down as permanent manager in January, was the first manager to include Gabriel in the first-team squad and Carrick, who greatly improved United’s form after becoming interim manager until the end of the season, will be tempted to give him minutes now that he has secured the permanent job.

The FA Cup’s age rules are different, leading to Fletcher being asked whether he would give Gabriel a place in his matchday squad before overseeing the third-round defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in January.

“He could be, but he won’t be,” replied Fletcher, who took over briefly between Amorim’s departure and Carrick’s arrival.

“Anyone can be chosen. I’m very happy with his talent, but the most important thing is that he continues to improve.”

“He is doing very well but he still has a lot to learn, he is improving internally, but the whole world is his and he just needs to continue his journey. His time will come later.”

“Right now, it’s a little early, I think. Most people would agree with me, but I couldn’t speak well of JJ.”

What positions can JJ Gabriel play?

United used Gabriel in midfield, in the middle of the attacking midfield, as a central striker and on the left wing. “He works hard,” Fletcher said, discussing Gabriel’s attitude and personal qualities.

“The first thing I say is that he likes football, he likes training, he likes to play, he likes to have the ball, he likes to express himself.

“He’s making great decisions, he’s just got an incredible passion for the game.” A 15-year-old girl with a bright future.

“He’s got an amazing family and amazing support around him, and he’s someone we’re delighted to have at the club.

“We hope he will continue to improve, learn every day and continue to be a real boy, enjoy playing football and go and express himself and score more goals so that Manchester United’s under-18s win every game. Then I will be a happy man.”

JJ Gabriel England record

Gabriel has won six caps for England at Under-15 level and three at Under-16 level. His first international goal is yet to come.

He was called up for the first time at Under-17 level in March 2026 to play against the Faroe Islands, Israel and Estonia at the St George’s Park training ground.

The Irish Mirror reported that Gabriel was born and raised in the UK but is eligible to play for England, Ireland, Cyprus and Trinidad and Tobago through his Irish father, Cypriot mother and Trinidadian grandfather.

Will JJ Gabriel become United’s youngest player?

Gabriel may follow in the footsteps of players like Ngumoha and Dowman by breaking records for his team.

Ngumoha became the youngest goalscorer for the Reds to score against Newcastle this season when the midfielder was four days shy of his 17th birthday.

Attacking midfielder Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history with a solo goal against Everton aged 16 years and 73 days.

At 15 years and 10 months to the start of the 2026/27 season, Gabriel has little time on his side to become United’s youngest player and almost every season he will be their youngest player at the moment.
