Troy Deeney: The amazing Erling Haaland is a surprise, but he is not in the Premier League’s top 10 strikers.

Erling Haaland may have broken many Premier League goalscoring records – but he is no longer one of the greatest strikers of all time.
That’s the view of top-flight striker Troy Deeney, who does not have the Manchester City star in the Premier League’s top 10.

Haaland turned 26 on Tuesday, celebrating his birthday just weeks before the start of the 2026/27 campaign.
After his first successful World Cup with Norway, the striker is turning his attention to domestic football.
And no doubt he will be looking for other records.
Haaland has made an incredible amount of history since joining Man City in 2022, breaking new boundaries every year.
He holds the title of being the fastest player to reach 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 100 goals in the Premier League.
The Norwegian is also the fastest player to reach 100 goals in less than 100 league games (94).
In addition, the City talisman holds the record for most goals scored in a single Premier League season (36).
That’s not all, Haaland is the only player to have scored a hat-trick in three consecutive domestic league games.
And he has another amazing record too, being the first player to score 50+ goals in a top flight season in England since 1931.
In total, Haaland has scored 112 Premier League goals in just 132 games, but Deeney doesn’t think he’s up there with the greats…

Is Haaland the best striker in the Premier League?
The Drive host Andy Goldstein read all those statistics that Haaland managed to achieve in the last four years.
And asked if he’s the best he’s ever seen in the top flight, Deeney replied: “Not yet no. Everything there is brilliant.
“When you start having this conversation, it’s always good to say you’re a genius… I also think there’s still a long way to go.
“My top five at the moment: Thierry Henry at one, Wayne Rooney at two, Alan Shearer at three, Andy Cole at four and then a fifth, it depends.
“The fifth is always changing… it goes between Harry Kane, Jermain Defoe, Sergio Aguero, Robbie Fowler, Luis Suarez.
“I have ten… Haaland is not there, yet, no.”

Goldstein then asked: “You’re the best in every single list and you’re not in your top 10 Premier League strikers?”
And Deeney went on to explain: “A lot for me is about feeling, how those players make you feel when you watch them.
“Henry, you look at him and you’re like ‘Wow’, you’ve never seen anyone so fast, he had that in the bottom corner.
“Rooney, when he was young, was one of the best players I’ve ever seen, he could do everything… Shearer, obviously the goals.
“Cole is the most underrated striker in Premier League history. He’s never been in anyone’s top 10… he’s scored over 180 goals.
“Defoe did it for many years, Aguero was unbelievable… I think [I’d put him above Haaland].”

What else does Haaland have to do to get in?
So, if Haaland isn’t in the top 10 strikers in the Premier League right now, how does he fit into the list?
Deeney says: “I think this season is going to be a lot of fun.
“The seasons at City, they were unbelievable anyway and he was part of that, an extra piece.
“It will be interesting now that they are not favorites to win it. Can he carry the team a little bit?”
He added: “I would like to see him take this team forward… when he played against Arsenal, against Gabriel, I was like ‘wow’.
“He pulled the team to win that game, I’d like to see more of that.”
