The match between England and Mexico in the last 32 of the 2026 World Cup is expected to have its first time of 01:00 BST on Monday.

England vs Mexico: Why the timing of the match was questionable at the World Cup

FIFA was set to confirm the change on Friday evening UK time before British and Mexican officials were upset by the proposals, according to BBC Sport.

The newspaper reported that FIFA did not provide an explanation for the proposal but added that there may be thunderstorms during the start of the match.

Mexico coach Javier Aguirre “expressed his displeasure at the possibility of changing the team’s plans”, according to the Mexican newspaper Record, who said “he thinks that a change of that magnitude will affect all the plans prepared for the match”.

England, already facing the challenge of adapting to the testing ground in Mexico City, were unsure if the game would be postponed when they flew into the capital and gave a “negative” “initial reaction”, according to ITV.

“They also note that there is no example – in the FIFA Club World Cup last summer or in this World Cup – of moving the first matches forward if there is an interruption of bad weather,” said journalist Gabriel Clarke.

“With the available forecasting technology, England is very surprised by this situation which is already two days before the start of the game.

“The FA is, of course, concerned about fans traveling to Mexico City who have booked to arrive on the morning of the game, expecting a 6pm kick-off.

“FIFA told me that ‘we are trying our best here, given the forecast, to do the right thing and to minimize disruption to teams and fans if there is disruption from bad weather.’

When asked about the reports after training earlier in the day, England striker Marcus Rashford said the rescheduling was “wrong” but “doesn’t matter”.

“The way we prepare must remain the same,” insisted Rashford. “You have to stay focused and ready for anything.

“That’s the strength of the team: everyone, including the players and staff, is ready for whatever challenges we find ourselves facing.”
