In-form Leigh beat Warrington 28-12 to close into the top four in the Betfred Super League.

The Leopards, chasing a fifth straight win, got off to a quick start at Leigh Sports Village as David Armstrong headed over from a corner and Lachlan Lam finished off a powerful attack to hit the post and give the home side a 10-0 lead after 15 minutes.

Adam Cook headed over a 27th-minute penalty following a challenge before Wolves responded when Toafofoa Sipley powered over to reduce the deficit after half an hour.

Cook pulled another penalty attempt wide from the right, but Leigh then added a third try when Innes Senior was sent over in the bottom left corner for a 16-6 half-time lead.

Leigh saw Josh Charnley sent to the sin bin early in the second half following a tackle on Toby King. Warrington then showed Leon Hayes a yellow card in the 51st minute for a dangerous challenge on Owen Trout.

Joe Ofahengaue stepped up to give Leigh their fourth try in the 53rd minute, Cook kicked the extra and then another penalty to make it 24-6.

Umyla Hanley cut through the visiting defense to extend their lead on the hour mark before winner Albert Hopoate headed into the bottom right corner for Warrington’s second try with 10 minutes remaining.

Leigh, however, saw off the closing stages, with Senior’s late corner points ruled out to go ahead, to continue their push towards the top four. They are now level on 26 points with Warrington, who have played a game less.

The Leopards coach, Adrian Lam, praised the way his team performed despite having to make changes in the game due to injuries.

“I thought we were strong today and we stood there and played really well,” said Lam, who confirmed that Frankie Halton has suffered a torn pectoral muscle which is believed to keep him out for the rest of the season.

“The first half was good and we gave up tries as well, but I though we were fit and ready.”

Warrington manager Sam Burgess felt his side deserved more.

“This is one of those games. I thought the scoreline didn’t reflect the game or how tight the game was,” Burgess told Sky Sports.

“In that second half I thought we started with a good spirit. We couldn’t score.”

Lolohea inspires the Giants to a rare victory

Tuimoala Lolohea starred as bottom side Huddersfield ended their 12-game wait for a Super League win with a 24-22 victory at York.

The sides scrapped a tight opener at the LNER Community Stadium, although Tom Inman thought he had gifted the Knights a goal in the eighth minute after Cody Hunter’s play and a delayed pass, but a review showed he had brought the ball down under pressure from George Flanagan.

However, they went ahead within two minutes when Paul McShane’s speculative kick was allowed to bounce off goal and David Nofoaluma dived over, Jon Bennison adding the conversion.

Mathieu Cozza missed a chance to pull the Giants back into it with 20 minutes remaining when he spilled the ball over the line, but Lewis Jagger’s clean footwork and power took him within six minutes to reduce the deficit and Flanagan finished off the conversion.

Flanagan saw a 34th-minute try ruled out for Connor Wrench’s block on Nikau Williams in the build-up and the half finished square at 6-6.

The visitors took the lead seven minutes into the second half when Lolohea chased his ball forward and received a touch as he and full back Toa Mata’afa dived, Flanagan’s goal made it 12-6.

York got back into it when Scott Galeano forced his way into the corner for a converted try, but Lolohea put in a Wrench and Flanagan added two points to give Huddersfield some breathing space.

They extended their lead to 24-10 when Flanagan converted Zac Woolford’s points, but Jordan Thompson and Inman both fell over in quick succession, and Bennison took the home side to within two points as a dramatic battle unfolded just short.

The Catalans are expecting a derby victory to go to Toulouse

Tommy Makinson scored two tries as the Catalans Dragons ended a four-game losing streak with a gritty 18-16 win over Toulouse.

On a rain-soaked night at the Stade Ernest-Wallon, John Cartwright’s side turned the tables on their French rivals following a 60-18 drubbing at the Magic Weekend.

Makinson collected Toby Sexton’s high kick and took advantage of difficult conditions to pounce over the line in the 14th minute after Toulouse had taken an early lead through Jake Shorrocks’ penalty.

Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet then leveled his way at the break before adding his second conversion to put the visitors 12-2 ahead.

In-form Toulouse had won their last three games this month.

The hosts went back 11 minutes into the second half when Romeo Tropis ran over Benjamin Laguerre and crossed to the left.

Makinson got his second with 13 minutes remaining following another fine assist from the impressive Sexton.

Shorrocks’ second penalty of the game cut the deficit before Aispuro-Bichet’s late penalty at the other end kept the home side at bay, before a try almost seconds later was converted by Toulouse’s Joe Cator.
