Preview: Alex Michelsen vs. Jack Draper – Citi Open prediction, head-to-head

Refreshed and ready to enter his sixth 2026 ATP Tour tournament, Jack Draper opens his Citi Open campaign against home favorite Alex Michelsen in a first-round match on Tuesday.

The former British No. 1 has secured a Washington card for the ATP 500 event, which will mark his first tournament since his impressive run to the semi-finals in Eastbourne in June.

While still in the early stages of his tennis journey, Draper’s career so far has been endlessly defined by the fitness debate, and injuries have reared their ugly heads repeatedly for the 24-year-old over the past 12 months.

In fact, Draper has never touched Grand Slam soil in 2026, sitting out the Australian Open with an arm injury, coming out of Roland-Garros with a leg problem, and missing Wimbledon due to a flare-up of his heavy arm.

Draper’s latest setback came at an inopportune time, as the former US Open semi-finalist had advanced to the finals of the Eastbourne Open – falling to France’s Ugo Humbert – in his first tournament in two months.

Having now spent another five weeks in the treatment room, Draper has dropped to 147th in the world, but the 26-year-old said he has never felt better in the past 12 months than at this moment.

Boasting a modest 8-5 record for the 2026 season, Draper is now preparing for his second Citi Open appearance; his first tournament in 2022 saw him defeat Stefan Kozlov first before losing in the second round to Andrey Rublev.

More familiar with the Citi courts, Draper’s first-round opponent Michelsen reached the quarter-finals of his first tournament in 2024, before being knocked out in the second round at the latest event.

The American fell short to the Briton in the 2025 tournament – losing 4-6 4-6 to the recently retired Dan Evans – but has turned his fortunes around against Union Jack flag-waving opponents.

Indeed, Michelsen returns to ATP Tour work after winning the Cranbook Tennis Classic Challenger event last weekend, thanks to 7-6.[4] 6-3 victory over Jacob Fearnley in the final, a few weeks ago he lost one man in five sets in the first round of Wimbledon.

Sitting 107 places above Draper in the ATP rankings, the world number 40 is still waiting for his first ATP Tour title, but all three of his last appearances have come on US Turf at the 2023 and 2024 Hall of Fame Opens, and the 2024 Winston-Salem Open.

Michelsen’s first major final in the 2023 Hall of Fame tournament ended in a loss to Adrian Mannarino, and the Frenchman or Student Tien will be awaiting the winner of Tuesday’s fight in the second round.

Michelsen and Draper will face each other for the first time on Tuesday, as the American right-hander takes on the British left-hander.

With a view to playing fewer games, Draper boasts the best service figures in 2026, winning 78% of his first deliveries compared to Michelsen’s 72%, and 54% of his second serves to the Americans’ 51%.

Draper also converted 40% of his break chances to Michelsen’s 36%, although the home favorite saved 63% of his break points against him, compared to Draper’s 55%.

We say: Draper to win in three sets

Even after a two-month layoff from April to June, Draper took care of business against the opposition he’d expect to beat in Eastbourne, and his statements about feeling better physically than ever in 2026 make for an interesting listen.

Michelsen’s recent trophy-winning experience is a valuable asset, but if Draper’s body is in truly peak condition, the Briton is backed to make a triumphant return.
