Australia 1 – 1 Egypt

Egypt entered the last 16 of the World Cup after defeating Australia on penalties in Dallas.

The match ended 1-1 after extra time but Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington both missed as Egypt scored four goals in a row against Matt Ryan – a 119th minute winner – to send Australia through.

Although Cristian Volpato’s early effort hit the post, it was Egypt who were the better side in the first half and Emam Ashour put them in the lead early on. Omar Marmoush should have doubled the advantage early in the second half.

But Egypt were punished when Australia scored an equalizer when Mohamed Hany put the ball into his own net. It still took a great save from Patrick Beach to deny Ramy Rabia the winner in the 94th minute and send the game into extra time.

Mohamed Salah survived in extra time but couldn’t force a winner and Egypt would have been right to feel aggrieved at missing their previous four penalties – especially when Ryan slotted in Australia’s goal.

The experienced stopper replaced Beach but was unable to save Egypt’s penalties, with Salah playing up his intensity in midfield. Two Australian defenders missed out – Souttar and Herrington – to end their hopes when Egypt face Argentina or Cape Verde.

For his Panenka punishment: “If anyone was going to do it, it would be me.

“I have more experience than others, I want to give them confidence but I decided at the last minute [on the run-up]. I don’t know if it’s my last World Cup or not, so I had to do it.”

Against Messi in the round of 16: “We have to respect both teams and we will see what happens next.

Australian manager Tony Popovic: “It’s difficult. We showed the world that Australian football is strong, they are an amazing team and I feel bad for them. Unfortunately we go home and the World Cup ends for us.”
