Newcastle fill key void as they agree £35m deal for Monaco midfielder Bamba
Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign midfielder Aladji Bamba from Monaco.
According to multiple reports, Bamba is heading to Tyneside for a medical after agreeing a €41million (£35m) package.
Newcastle will pay an initial £30m, with the rest coming in the form of add-ons.
The 20-year-old will be Newcastle’s fourth signing in what has been another testing summer for the Magpies.
Newcastle have already signed France Under-21 goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, Ivory Coast winger Bazoumana Toure and another midfielder in Sean Steur, 18, who joined from Ajax.
Bamba joined Monaco’s first team last season, playing 25 games in all competitions, 12 of which he started. A dominant defensive midfielder, Bamba has provided two assists in his 18 Ligue 1 appearances.
The youth focus marks a change in approach from Newcastle, which has seen Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali move to Barcelona and Tottenham respectively. Questions remain over the future of captain Bruno Guimaraes amid interest from Arsenal.
Newcastle also missed out on two key targets, Victor Munoz and Johan Manzambi. Munoz signed for Liverpool while Manzambi chose to join Aston Villa.
But in Bamba they seem to have found a player who fills the long gap in Eddie Howe.

While Newcastle’s midfield trio of Tonali, Guimaraes and Joelinton have been consistently hailed as one of the best in the Premier League over the past few seasons, they have been without a true defensive midfielder for a long time.
The absence of the number six was particularly noticeable last season as Newcastle slumped to 12th place.
Many times, the opposition managed to find valuable space between the defense and the midfield and put Newcastle under a lot of pressure. The 2025-26 campaign marks the first time they have conceded more league goals (55) than they have scored (53) since the 2021-22 campaign, when Howe came in after a Saudi-led takeover and rescued the club from relegation.
Despite his lack of experience, Newcastle will hope that Bamba can rectify this issue as he impressed in his first season in Ligue 1.
Per Opta, Bamba won 9.1 duels per 90 minutes in Ligue 1 in 2025-26, the most of any midfielder to play 500 minutes or more.
Although Newcastle have addressed one issue in midfield, they may still need to find a replacement for talismanic captain Guimaraes, if he is to get his wish to move to Arsenal.
Despite reports from Newcastle that the club have yet to find an official approach to the Gunners, the Premier League champions are expected to step up their efforts to sign the Brazilian star. Newcastle are said to be valuing Guimaraes for £100m.
And with Joe Willock reportedly in talks to move to Besiktas, there is at least one more midfielder coming in from Newcastle before the end of the transfer window.
