Preview: Club Leon vs Atlas – prediction, team news, schedule

Club Leon will host Atlas at the Estadio Leon on Saturday as Liga MX kicks off the Apertura 2026 season with a Jornada 1 match between two sides looking to put last season behind them.

This is the first Liga MX campaign to be played under a permanently closed league structure, after the confederation confirmed this week that promotion and relegation had been postponed, and it comes with Atlas parachuting in on the first day without a head coach.

Liga MX published its new Reglemento de Competencia on July 15, and Article 35 clearly states that clubs in the top flight will no longer be relegated to Liga de Expansion MX, and Expansion clubs will no longer be promoted for sporting merit no matter where they finish.

The old quotient table still exists in name only, it is tracked for statistical purposes in all six competitions, but it no longer carries the threat of relegation or the financial penalties that used to come with its bottom.

That one decision resets the stakes for every game this season, including Leon and Atlas, because bad campaigns are no longer a threat of relegation, only pride and Liguilla titles are up for grabs.

None of these changes are required by any manager from Friday, but it explains why this opener feels different to previous curtain-raisers even before the ball is kicked.

La Fiera spent last season teetering between promise and collapse, and Clausura 2026 summed it up perfectly.

Javier Gandolfi’s side finished 10th in the final table with 22 points, having scored 22 goals but conceded 32, a minus-10 goal difference that ranks among the worst defensive results in this division.

The campaign ended with a 4-1 defeat to Toluca on the final day, a result that confirmed Leon’s exit from Liguilla contention and underlined the defensive weaknesses Gandolfi has been tasked with fixing since taking over permanently.

Gandolfi arrived as an emergency appointment last season after Ignacio Ambriz resigned following the 11th round defeat by Tijuana, and this Apertura is his first full campaign in sole control of the project.

Atlas, in contrast, enjoyed a regular season, finishing sixth with 26 points in a defense that has conceded 18 goals in 17 games, comfortably stronger than Leon’s defense.

Diego Cocca’s side reached the quarter-finals of the Liguilla, where they lost the first leg 3-2 in Guadalajara before falling 1-0 to champions Cruz Azul in the second leg, coming out 4-2 on aggregate to win the Clausura title.

That guide of form humbles Atlas going into Friday, but the composure suggested by a sixth-placed finish has been completely destroyed off the pitch in the days leading up to kick-off.

Cocca left the club on July 13, four days before kick-off, after new ownership group Grupo PRODI could not agree on terms to extend his contract, with reports pointing to disagreements over transfer targets and the club’s direction.

Los Rojinegros moved quickly and have reportedly agreed a two-year contract with Argentine striker Hernan Crespo, who comes with six trophies including the Copa Sudamericana with Defensa y Justicia and the Qatari league title with Al-Duhail.

Crespo is expected to be officially presented once his registration papers have been completed, but he will not take part in the game, as the club is handing interim charge of Leon’s journey to youth team coach Omar Flores.

Crespo’s first game in the dugout was instead included in the Jornada 2 away to Santos Laguna, meaning Atlas will travel to Estadio Leon with a guard in the technical area and a team that has had days rather than weeks to process the chaos.

That’s almost unsolvable since the preparation gets four days from the start of the season, and it’s fair to expect some rust from the management of the game of Atlas regardless of the quality of each person on the field.

Leon’s team has changed the situation significantly in the off-season, and that has created a selection of heads that go beyond simplicity and intensity.

Gandolfi’s squad currently exceeds Liga MX’s nine-man limit on foreign-trained players, and the club has been desperately trying to move players to bring the squad back within regulation before the signing deadline.

Nicolas Fonseca, Santiago Colombatto and Federico Vinas remain in limbo after their loan spells at Real Oviedo ended in the Spanish club’s relegation, and none of the trio appear to be part of Gandolfi’s plans for the first leg, with the club understood to be looking to sell rather than regroup.

Leon also lost defender Steven Barreiro and goalkeeper Oscar Jimenez this summer, with Jimenez moving to newly promoted Atlante, while Colombian duo Juan Guevara and Jhohan Romana arrived to freshen up the back line.

Centre-back Sebastian Vegas has missed the closing weeks of Clausura 2026 with a knee injury, but the Chilean has been a regular fixture in pre-season training and has publicly expressed his desire to extend his stay in Guanajuato, so he should be available for selection.

Midfielder Ismael Diaz has returned to the team after representing Panama at the World Cup, where he appeared in the group stage before Panama’s exit against Ghana and Croatia, and returned to pre-season training within days.

Diaz scored five goals in the Clausura 2026 and remains one of Leon’s most attacking options, although the shortened pre-season window means his sharpness from the off is a fair question.

For the visitors, Camilo Vargas is expected to continue in goal, while Aldo Rocha is likely to take the field as club captain following his impressive performances throughout last season, including a goal against Cruz Azul in the regular season.

Atlas behind Gaddi Aguirre, Manuel Capasso and Rodrigo Schlegel has been a fixed defensive unit for a long time, and there is no reason to set a caretaker to tear that apart four days before the start of the season.

Leon has home advantage, full time off under a stable coaching staff and an attacking group that already knows Gandolfi’s ideas, while Atlas arrives with a goalkeeper in the dugout and a team still to accept the departure of its coach days before the start of the games.

Atlas’ base numbers from last season are strong, especially defensively, but a botched adjustment tends to come early in the season rather than late, and the home opener against a team without its long-term project in place favors the hosts.
