Why the Argentine Football Association is reported to be investigated in the US

As In Argentina prepare to face in Switzerland in the quarterfinals of the World Cup, everything will be focused on Lionel Messi and his attempt to repeat the World Cup. Well, almost all the attention. There’s an off-screen story, with the Argentina Football Association reportedly under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for alleged money laundering and fraud. United States.
The investigation began in 2025 before expanding to 2026 following a warning from Argentina’s Ministry of Security. Currently, the investigation is in its early stages, and no one has been formally charged with any wrongdoing. Also, none of the results of this can affect the current World Cup in Argentina. But what we do know is that Argnetina’s activities in America are being investigated.
What the investigators are looking at
The focus is on what Argentina did in Miami and at least $260 million that went through the American financial system and what it was used for, according to an Argentine newspaper. The Nation. There is also an additional amount of 57 million dollars in transfers, which do not have a clear purpose, according to the report, which adds that the FBI has questioned Guillermo Tofani, an Argentine sports businessman. The Nation says it was able to obtain bank documents showing that hundreds of millions of dollars were transferred to Citibank, Synovus, Bank of America, JP Morgan, and PNC Bank, but that only a portion of those funds could be traced to operating expenses.
What are they trying to find?
The goal is to establish a relationship between AFA and TourProdEnter LLC, the company that hosts Argentina’s commercial agreements with sponsors. That company is owned by producer Javier Faroni and is being investigated by at least three federal prosecutors.
Why doesn’t this come out of nowhere
The US investigation comes on top of the turmoil that has been brewing in Argentina for months. Back in December, Argentine state police raided the AFA headquarters and several football clubs as part of an investigation into allegations of money laundering and tax evasion involving financial firm Sur Finanzas. Additional criminal complaints named AFA president Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia and other association officials, who denied wrongdoing and said they were politically motivated amid a wide-ranging dispute with Argentine President Javier Milei over the future of professional football in the country.
The reason US prosecutors have jurisdiction here comes in the way of money. Because many international sponsorship payments and media rights are allegedly transferred to a company registered in the US and the American banking system, federal prosecutors may have the power to control activities conducted outside of Argentina if they involve US financial institutions. That’s the same legal framework that federal authorities used in the landmark 2015 FIFA bribery prosecution, a case that shocked FIFA’s leadership and reshaped how sports finance is handled around the world.
What did it look like before AFA and TourProdEnter?
Previously, sponsor payments made in Argentina were made directly to the association and then reduced by the new football clubs in the country, but after winning the 2022 World Cup, this changed when the AFA entered into an agreement with TourProdEnter, and their presence continued to grow in Miami following the arrival of Lionel Messi in the United States. Argentina opened an office in South Florida ahead of the Copa America in 2023, which was followed by two training facilities, one of which is currently open and the other is ongoing.
Will this affect the team in this tournament?
It’s impossible. It probably won’t affect anything on the field because this is not a FIFA eligibility case. But it can still follow the team during the World Cup. Tapia and other officials, who are already dealing with legal headaches at home, now have one more fire to put out, something that will worry the top brass and nothing the team and coaches should worry about.
Where things stand
No criminal charges have been announced in the United States against the AFA or its leadership at this time. Tapia remains in the US with the national team, and investigators appear to be gathering evidence and financial records.
