Will England win the 2026 World Cup?
England are among the favorites to win the World Cup and have a talented squad with many of the best players from the Premier League and Europe, led by talented captain and focused Bayern Munich talisman Harry Kane.
The Three Lions won all eight of their qualifying games under Thomas Tuchel, who established himself as one of the best managers in football – including winning the Champions League in 2021/22 with Chelsea – before taking on his first international role with the Three Lions.
No team England faced in the qualifiers was ranked 32nd at the time and they have not been assured against higher opposition under Tuchel, who oversaw a 3-1 defeat of home side Senegal – 19th in the world – in a friendly a year before the World Cup.
They last beat Argentina in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers, knocked out France in the quarter-finals of the last edition and Croatia in the 2018 semi-finals.
There are also questions about how England’s players will cope with the intense heat and the amount of travel that may be involved after the clubs’ long seasons, but they have shown signs that they can compete with a 4-2-3-1 and a more stable squad.
Spain, France, Argentina and Portugal are among the players England will likely look at if they are to claim the title for the first time since 1966.
