Ryan Fox has followed Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns into the history books at The 154th Open, becoming the latest players to join the exclusive club with a ’round of 62′ at the men’s major.

Herbert matched the lowest round in Open history with an 8-under 62 at Royal Birkdale, eight years since Branden Grace first managed it – at the same venue – in the third round of the 2017 tournament.

The Australian threatened to post an even lower score at nine under with two holes to play, including a reachable par-five in two, but carded a par-bogey to register only sixth place in the men’s majors.

Herbert’s 62 was matched by Burns on a rare day, with the American coming off the green on the last four to close out the match with three birdies in his second-round 62.

Burns and Herbert’s efforts came six days after Haeran Ryu broke the record with a third-round 60 in his victory at the Amundi Evian Championship.

More history was made the next day as Fox topped the leaderboard in the third round, combining for nine birdies and one bogey to take the clubhouse lead, marking the first time three players had posted ’rounds of 62′ in the same week of the major.

Branden Grace, The Open, 2017 (R3)

There had previously been 31 rounds of 63 in the history of the men’s major tournament, but South African Grace became the first man to go down after carding eight birdies in a bomb-free round at Royal Birkdale.

He posted five birdies on the front-nine 29 and followed it up with another 14 for consecutive advantages from 16, with a par putt at the end enough to set a new benchmark in the men’s game.

Rickie Fowler, US Open, 2023 (R1)

Fowler became the first player to card a ’round of 62′ at the US Open, combining for 10 birdies and two bogeys to go to eight under adverse conditions on the par-70 layout at the Los Angeles Country Club.

Fowler posted three birdies in the five-hole 12th and canceled out a bogey on the 17th with a four-birdie run, then picked up shots at the sixth and eighth before two-putting from 60 feet for the closing par.

Xander Schauffele, US Open, 2023 (R1)

Hours after Fowler made US Open history, Schauffele followed suit at the same venue after carding eight birdies in a free start to his bid for a first major title.

Schauffele made a 40-footer on his opening hole and posted three of his first five birdies, and five more after the turn — including a 60-footer from the fringe at the fifth — to put him at 8 under.

Schauffele carded nine birdies during an impressive bogey-free opening round at Valhalla Golf Club, which saw him record his first ’round of 62′ at the PGA Championship and just his fourth at the men’s majors.

He became the first player to card the most rounds of 62 in major history, opening the round at nine under and equaling the lowest score – compared to par – ever in a men’s major, with Schauffele two-putting from 30 meters on his final hole.

Shane Lowry, PGA Championship, 2024 (R3)

Lowry was eight strokes off the half-time lead but produced a stunning nine-under 62, two days clear of Schauffele, making nine birdies in a bogey-free round and missing an opportunity at the final hole to seal the men’s first ’round of 61′.

He raced to the turn on 29 and posted back-to-back birdies from 13, while Lowry added another on 17 before missing a 12-foot birdie chance at the end for a straight record.

Lucas Herbert, The Open, 2026 (R2)

Herbert equaled the lowest front nine in major history as he raced to the turn on 28, with a 40-footer for the seventh among six birdies on the front nine, and the Australian added back-to-back gains from the 11th to eight under.

A 60-under round was never out of the question when he drove the 16th and found his way out of the green on the next par-five, but Herbert missed a 10-foot birdie before agonizingly missing a putt from five feet to finish in par.

Sam Burns, The Open, 2026 (R2)

Burns was playing two teams behind Herbert and reached the turn of 32, when the American started his back nine with consecutive birdies and added another from tap-in range on the 13th.

He took a shot at 16 and rolled from 20 feet to birdie the 17th, then delighted the Open crowd by breaking the record by jumping a greenside bunker to birdie the par-four final and add his place in history.

Ryan Fox, The Open, 2026 (R3)

Fox followed up with three birdies in the first five holes with a birdie from 55 feet at the fourth and sixth, and the New Zealander birdied the eighth to get to the turn in 29 and start his back nine with a birdie.

He canceled out a bogey on the 13th by bogeying the next par-five and posting back-to-back birdies from the 16th, leaving him looking for a birdie for the record straight, with a par putt at the end enough to add him to the ’62 club’.

The lowest round at The Masters is 63, posted by Nick Price in 1986 and Greg Norman during the opening round in 1996, while there have been multiple rounds of 63 in each of the PGA Championship, the US Open and The Open.

The lowest round on the PGA Tour is a 58, posted by Jim Furyk at the 2016 Travelers Championship, while the record on the DP World Tour is Oliver Fisher’s 59 at the 2018 Portugal Masters.
