Still, it’s England and the game lurks in the dénouement of a campaign that petered out in the final minutes of their final defeat by Argentina in Atlanta. A day of challenging climbs, some on the queen level, and a long grind of the first stage – a Grand Ballon sure to test the determination of the peloton and a Ballon d’Alsace that is likely to rise even further. There is no compromise, as the Col du Haag precedes a 6km descent to the finish at Le Markstein Fellering. A day of separation, mountain battles and compelling action.
