England must try more seamers ahead of World Cup after India made mistakes in 50 overs, says Stuart Broad | Cricket news

Stuart Broad says England are crying out for one more seamer, and the time to waste it is now, with the Cricket World Cup more than a year away.

Three days after India climbed to the top of the T20 world rankings, England’s ODI struggles were exposed with a comprehensive six-wicket defeat by the No. 1-ranked side at Edgbaston.

Harry Brook’s side are eighth in the table, as they suffered their sixth consecutive defeat against India, dropping 14 points from their last 20 matches.

“England are in eighth place in the international rankings and they are playing like they are in eighth place,” said Broad. Sky Sports Cricket. “They need to get more experience in the role of players.”

Joe Root’s unbeaten 76 and Liam Dawson’s first ODI half-century rescued England from 80-5 after a top-order collapse that set India on 259 to win.

That target ended up looking too easy, but only after the visitors recovered from losing Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the space of six balls.

Shubman Gill’s 80 from 75 balls before retiring with injury did the most damage after India’s early win over England saw Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue, the only quicks, bowl 13 in the first 16 overs.

England’s lack of other relievers in Archer, Tongue and spinner Adil Rashid is an area Broad believes needs to be addressed urgently.

“After the defeat at Edgbaston, there might be a change of mind about playing another seamer,” he added.

“If we look to the next World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, it will be the fast and tall bowlers who will do the damage there.

“If we look at the composition and balance of this team, with Rashid, Liam Dawson and Will Jacks, and the part-time presence of Jacob Bethell and Joe Root, I would lean towards playing more of a seamer instead of one of the bowlers because it gives that player experience and exposure to the same conditions.

“Taking 10 wickets in an ODI, especially in that middle period, is difficult. I look at Archer – he’s a natural wicket-taker, the best white-ball bowler we have. Tongue can take wickets. Rashid can take wickets. But I feel England need another fast bowler to support that team.

“Sam Curran is a good cricketer, but he is not a first-change seam bowler. England need someone to go through the middle overs, bouncers and seamers, and take the outside edge, so they don’t sit on Archer all the time.

“Would it be Brydon Carse, Gus Atkinson or Saqib Mahmood? England need to start trialing now.”
